In celebration of the new Muppets movie (which was amazing!), I’d like to take this opportunity to post one of the greatest performances in the entire run of the superlative The Muppet Show. Paul Williams singing his own “An Old-Fashioned Love Song” with an open vulnerability, the kind of melancholic grown-up tune that made The Muppet Show occasionally arresting television among all the wonderful silliness. And you have to love that one Muppet who looks exactly like him. No wonder he came back to write “Rainbow Connection;” every guest on this show, from Mark Hamill to Levar Burton to Peter Sellers to Linda Ronstadt to Mr. Williams, looked like they were having the best time with our felt friends.
My hand looks like it’s huge and also made out of putty, but look at these TMNT awesome people. That’s a legit April O’Neil and Casey Jones right there! To those of you who manage to look like you walked straight out of a cartoon: I salute you.
And yes, I definitely greeted her with an “April O’Neil! Channel Six Newwwwsssss.” My brain, high on reading the Hark! A Vagrant anthology, continued on with “I’m writing a story about how you can go eat a dick, or possibly a musical called Choking on Dicks Forever, Where Did All of These Dicks in My Mouth Come From.” I’m very glad that didn’t come out of my mouth, because I don’t know who actually reads Kate Beaton and also dresses up for NYCC.
I did, however, leave them with a “my best to Splinter and the boys.” Because I’m a huge nerd.
